Talkuza for Mac

Guide — updated 27 October 2026

Best free speech-to-text software (2026).

Free dictation is real — but ‘free’ means different things: a word cap, a missing feature, or your audio in someone else's cloud. Here's what's actually free, what it costs you, and when a cheap paid app is the better deal.

What’s actually free

Best truly free

1. macOS Dictation — free, built into every Mac

No download, no account, no word limit, no price. Press the dictation key and talk in any text field. The catch: no GPT correction, no smart punctuation, no meeting notes, no voice commands. For short, occasional dictation it's genuinely enough — and it costs nothing, forever.

Best for: occasional use, zero budget, zero setup.

Best free tier

2. Wispr Flow free tier — 2,000 words a week

Wispr Flow's free tier gives you 2,000 words a week on desktop, with AI correction, across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. It never expires — the limit is the word count, not the calendar. If you dictate a little each day, it may be all you ever need. Go over the cap, and Pro is $15/month or $144/year. Cloud-only, no offline mode.

Best for: light, regular dictation on any platform. wisprflow.ai

Best free trial of a paid app

3. Talkuza — 7-day free trial, then $2.99/month

Talkuza isn't free — it's cheap. The 7-day trial (one per Mac, ever, no card needed) gives you the whole app: hold-Fn dictation with GPT correction, Echo Notes meeting recording, Prompt Forge, Canto voice commands, and MCP sync. After the trial it's $2.99/month — about $36 a year worldwide, against Wispr Flow Pro's $144. Local-first privacy: your keys live on your Mac and Talkuza's backend never sees your audio, keys, or text.

Best for: Mac users who dictate daily and want the full toolbox for the lowest verified price. Start the free trial

What “free” usually costs you

  • A word cap. Wispr Flow's free tier stops at 2,000 words a week. Fine for messages; not for a day of writing.
  • Missing features. Free dictation rarely includes GPT correction, meeting notes, or voice commands — the things that save the most time.
  • Your audio in a vendor's cloud. Cloud-only free tiers process your voice on someone else's servers. Talkuza's local-first design avoids that — but it's paid, not free.
  • Your time. Fixing uncorrected transcripts by hand costs more than $2.99/month if you dictate every day.

Rule of thumb: if you dictate for more than half an hour a day, a paid app pays for itself in a week. If you dictate a few sentences, stay free — macOS Dictation is right there.
